Common surfaces

Where would one surface end and another begin?  How would a surface begin or end without becoming an image, which is the effect of a projection onto a surface and not the surface?  If the surface negates a homogeneous projection of an image, it also has no potential for division, making it a singular and shared space.

On the Surface projects the relationship between an image and the surface upon which an image projects.  If the surface negates a teleological representation of itself via an image, it also has no potential for division, making it a singular and shared space.  In Surface, all the words “the” in newspaper articles are traced with different colored inks after transferring their ink onto paper.  Circles are drawn around all the articles in what becomes a random arrangement.  I intended to investigate the random emergence of configurations of images from projected images in order to project another image of the labor involved as unrepresentable.

The artist applies a materialist precept of the image.  Presence becomes absolute in the absence of representation.

If the conjuncture of image and event seems a contradictory one, it is because the former involves thought and the other does not.   If “[n]othing is unrepresentable as a property of an event” (Rancière, Jacques, The Future of the Image, translated by Gregory Elliott, Verso: London and New York, 2007, p. 129) according to philosopher Jacques Rancière, it is by tracing the edges of images that a semblance forms, whereby an outline of an event appears, and, more precisely, appears present.
